The Hawaii Whale Research Foundation staff, composed of highly skilled and professional individuals, is entirely volunteer. Each staff member undertakes considerable annual expense, financial and otherwise, to participate in HWRF's research effort. The only personal reward is an intangible one -- meeting the challenges of trying to understand one of the world's most endangered and mysterious animals.
HWRF has great experience conducting field research in Hawaiian waters, and with the particular logistical challenges to be found in Hawaii. In light of this, HWRF is in a position to assist independent researchers who wish to work with Hawaiian humpback whales but who lack local knowledge, contacts or experience with humpback whales. Please consult directly with HWRF research director Dr. Dan Salden about how a collaborative or supportive arrangement can be reached. To contact Dr. Salden, please email him at: dsalden AT siue DOT edu |
HWRF is seeking a small number research associates to assist with data collection during the months of January through May. Candidates should be researchers and doctoral students with demonstrated interest in marine mammals and, preferably, large cetaceans. 95% of data collection occurs above water and consists of note taking, photographing identifying features of individual whales, and some videotaping of whale behavior.
HWRF is specifically NOT seeking topside or underwater photographers or videographers.
The HWRF field season in Maui runs from January through May. Scheduling of staff presence in Maui begins in September of the preceding year. Visiting (off-island) staff are expected to make a minimum time contribution of four weeks.
It is important to realize that HWRF staff and visiting researchers are not paid. Travel and living expenses are entirely the responsibility of the individual. HWRF staff may be able to assist in locating reasonable housing in the Lahaina area.
